Hutchings Family Scholarship
"Trinity is the best we have in the Episcopal Church, and we thank God for it."
In Fall 2006, The Hutchings Family Scholarship was established at Trinity in memory of John Henry and Virginia Ross Hutchings. This generous scholarship is a result of their bequest, the sale of a farm they owned in Nebraska, divided equally among four charitable organizations. Trinity Master of Divinity students will benefit from their legacy for many, many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Hutchings of Santa Barbara, California have been involved with Trinity since 1985 and always admired Trinity’s faithful adherence to Christian principles and our outreach in Christ’s name.
The Hutchings were extremely generous with their wealth throughout their lives, and they felt particularly led to support Trinity, among several other charities. In a letter to former Dean/President William Frey in 1990, Mr. Hutchings wrote, “Virginia and I are thankful for Trinity and wish you every conceivable success; we thank God for your strong and steady influence in our presently wavering church.” There was always a sense that as the Lord had blessed them, so the Hutchings were called to generously bless those in the Lord’s work.
Former Trinity Dean/President Peter Moore visited Mrs. Hutchings in Santa Barbara, shortly after the death of her husband, and described her as “a devoted woman who loves the Lord and is orthodox to the core.”
Mr. Hutchings passed away on August 5, 1997 and Mrs. Hutchings on February 6, 2006. Their daughter Sara Maxwell died in September of 2006; their daughter Phebe (Stan) Lee lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Hutchings are also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
