The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.) regulates the right to make photocopies of copyrighted material. Federal law permits libraries to provide a photocopy under certain conditions specified in the law. One conditions is that the photocopy is not to be "used for any other purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." A person may be liable for copyright infringement if he or she makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy for purpose in excess of "fair use."
